Curtiss-Wright Industrial Division, which includes the product brands of Arens Controls, Penny & Giles, PG Drives Technology and Williams Controls, is an excellent supplier in providing components and sub-systems which enable customer specific solutions for on- and off-highway vehicles. We develop and manufacture electronic throttle controls, transmission shifters and sensors for commercial off-highway equipment and heavy trucks, helping to address the long-term trend towards attaining higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions. We also supply operator controls and advanced motor controllers for hybrid and electric vehicles, such as buses, forklift trucks, pallet stackers, wheelchairs, and rehabilitation chairs.

The Opportunity | Senior Embedded Software Engineer

Due to an increase in workload, Curtiss-Wright are looking for three new Software Engineers to join our growing team. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Senior Embedded Software Engineers will be responsible for the design of safety critical, real time control systems which underpin our electric vehicle controllers. You will be involved in all aspects of software and control system development from initial concept through to release to production and beyond. This includes interpreting specifications and developing robust software solutions to meet these requirements on time and to budget.

The Senior Embedded Software Engineer will be responsible for advising project teams on software development techniques and constructively evaluating and critiquing software designs. You will be passionate about playing an active part in developing the group capabilities and mentoring junior engineers. You shall play a lead role in development and maintenance of the software codebase and toolchain.

You will also have working knowledge of RTOS based and bare metal systems in safety-critical, multiprocessor, multicore systems.

Responsibilities:

You will work across small dedicated project teams in the design of high volume and safety-critical embedded systems for the Industrial and Mobility vehicle markets. The software we develop ranges between low level drivers, real-time motor control, sensor processing and high-level applications such as GUI and wireless interfaces.

  • Performing architectural design based on system requirements specifications.
  • Developing modular, reusable subsystems and libraries with robust interfaces.
  • Organizing design review meetings.
  • Performing interactive and automated unit, integration, system and regression testing.
  • On target debugging, root cause fault analysis and reporting.
  • Maintaining a defect tracking system and version control system.
  • Following defined development procedures and processes
  • Writing of clear technical documentation.
  • Continually updating technical knowledge and skills by attending in-house and/or external courses, reading manuals and accessing new applications.

Your Expertise:

  • Excellent knowledge of C language and /or C++.
  • Experience of ARM based processors, including multiprocessor, multicore boards.
  • Experience developing peripheral drivers and embedded protocols.
  • Show an appreciation of safety critical design in a high volume, including defensive coding techniques, robust error handling techniques, MISRA C.
  • Design for high volume, low cost products.
  • A team worker and leader who can enthusiastically collaborate with other engineers.
  • Self-motivated, goal driven with a can-do attitude.
  • Have good attention to detail and be an excellent communicator with a desire to deliver and contribute fully to successful projects.

Desirable:

  • Development of software to medical standards. i.e. IEC62304 or industrial standards i.e. IEC61508, ISO13849, IEC62061, Machinery directive.
  • UML design methodology.
  • Experience in higher level embedded platforms (e.g. Embedded Linux) would be advantageous.
  • Modern automotive serial communication protocols.
  • Motor control theory
  • Waterfall and agile development processes.
