Mechanical Stress / Fatigue Engineer

Under general direction, you will improve quality, increase efficiency and/or reduce cost of new and existing products; involvement may begin at any step from ideation to full-scale manufacturing.

To create new laser peening processes, you will direct experiments to collect data which become the basis of FEA models which you will develop. Based on the FEA results, you will design test programs to qualify the laser peening process. You then compile and evaluate test data to determine appropriate limits and variables for process or material specifications.

After a successful test program, you will deploy the laser peening process using a variety of in-house software which you have helped to write, debug, and improve upon. You will regularly build MATLAB tools, and create robot processes using RAPID.

As part of the process deployment, you will define processing equipment requirements and specifications. You will review and improve upon processing techniques and methods applied in the manufacture, fabrication, and evaluation of processes. You will train and hand off the process to technicians, providing support as necessary. There will also be opportunities to work closely with optical and software engineers in the design of the final production processes for customer parts.

Your Challenge

  • Perform analysis and design of laser peening processes by conducting experiments and developing FEA models.
  • Define, interpret and develop quality standards in accordance with contractual requirements and a fundamental understanding of engineering and how laser peening works.
  • Develop new software tools and improve existing ones.
  • Investigate and analyze a variety of issues, providing the technical assistance needed to resolve them.
  • Implement corrective action when faults are identified.

Your Expertise

  • Required
    • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Materials, or other relevant engineering discipline
    • Experience in mechanical testing and material analysis
    • Experience in stress analysis (FEA)
    • Willingness to take initiative and contribute as a cross-functional team member
    • Understanding of project management with strong analytical skills and interpersonal skills
    • Proficient user of MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Word)
    • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Desired
    • Experience in MATLAB
    • Graduate degree in engineering
    • Background in robotics
    • Use of ABAQUS
    • Aerospace industry experience
