The Opportunity | Metallurgical Engineer

The Metallurgical Engineer performs high quality, routine-to-specialized metallurgical analysis to meet customer expectations in a timely and cost effective manner. Work independently on special projects and with co-workers across departments. Independent activities include performing diverse metallographic evaluations, training other personnel, teaching courses, method development, operation and maintenance of instrumentation, sample preparation, technical consultation, data review and reporting, and customer interface.

Major Accountabilities /Deliverables

  • Perform high quality, complex metallurgical evaluations of materials using a variety of techniques. Sample preparation, testing, data review and reporting are all components of this position. Prepare test reports for customers. Coordinate the input of other departments for overall testing and IMR report requirements. 

  • Serve as resident expert and technical resource in metallurgy and metallographic techniques.

  • Train other employees within the department on test methods, procedures and other practices as required. Serve as a metallography instructor for IMR training classes as assigned.

  • Conduct high quality metallurgical testing evaluations demonstrating proficiency in utilization of a variety of techniques. Coordinate the input of other departments for overall testing and evaluation and IMR report requirements.

  • Write metallurgical evaluation reports, communicate results, answer questions and provide service to ensure positive customer relationships.

  • Interface with customers on a regular, proactive basis to ensure that the highest level of customer satisfaction is maintained.


  • Minimum 4 years' experience in a laboratory environment

  • Ability to follow and interpret specification and work with metallurgical tools, equipment and instrumentation

  • Previous demonstrated experience with metallurgical evaluations including weld qualification, thermal spray coatings, aerospace alloys ( eg. Ti and Ni alloys), additive manufactured materials, electron microscopy, or other advanced alloys, applications or analysis techniques is desired

  • Bachelors Degree in Metallurgy, Materials or Mechanical Engineering
