Optical Engineer

A metal surface treatment company with multiple worldwide facilities has openings in its Livermore, CA facility for an Optical Engineer position in a high tech R&D and production shop environment. This facility uses high energy lasers to treat critical metal components used in aerospace, power generation, and other industries.

Location: Livermore, CA

Your Challenge

  • The development of new optical designs to support laser peening including lasers, beam formatting, and beam delivery.
  • The integration of optical designs with methods of robot and part handling including mechanical design and software control.
  • The support of ongoing commercial laser peening production by overseeing, maintaining, and debugging problems with laser systems, optical components, software, computer controlled automation.
  • The support of offsite laser peening operations in the U.S. and abroad via telephone and travel, as needed.

Your Expertise

  • Bachelors level degree or equivalent experience in optics and/or lasers.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must read, write, and verbally communicate in the English language.
  • Continuing employment is contingent on obtaining a DoD secret clearance.
  • Graduate level training in optics and laser design.
  • Experience in optical design tools such as Zemax, CodeV, or equivalent.
  • Experience in automated systems design (e.g. robotics), integration, and testing; particularly regarding debugging faults and routine maintenance.
  • Knowledgeable in C, C++ and embedded systems software design and implementation.
  • Experience in a factory production environment desirable.
